This presentation will cover different approaches to the task of debugging Java systems, and explore their pros and cons. It will also discuss specific issues related to debugging Java, given its use in a variety of networked environments ranging from applets to application servers to embedded systems, and given its unique features such as being an interpreted language and having automatic garbage collection. The format will be interactive with the audience with a goal to resolve the needs of the real Java developer and the various technologies available for Java debugging.
Sriram Sankar is president and CEO of Metamata, Inc., a 2 year old Java developer products company (http://www.metamata.com). Metamata specializes in pure Java debugger technology for all Java VM's (browsers, application servers, and embedded system included). Prior to Metamata, he was one of the founders of SunTest, a business unit of Sun dedicated to Java testing tools. SunTest grew from 6 employees to over 50 in about 1 year before it was absorbed into JavaSoft. Earlier, he has held research positions at Sun Microsystems Laboratories and Stanford University.
Sriram holds a PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University. His technical areas of interest includes software development environments, language design, compiler technology, formal methods, and software testing.
Prior to Metamata, Sriram's significant achievements include JavaCompilerCompiler (http://www.metamata.com/JavaCC) - currently the most popular parser and scanner generator for Java; and ADL (http://adl.xopen.org), an assertion based software testing environment developed in collaboration with X/Open.
